Laboratorios de Biológicos y Reactivos de México (BIRMEX); Biologics and Reagents Laboratories of Mexico, is a state owned company that produces, distributes and imports vaccines, heterologous sera and clinical diagnostic products.

Birmex develops new vaccines using cutting edge technology to face future challenges and supply the internal and international demand.

Our personnel can boast a vast expertise in biologics production which combines with a stringent quality control of the production procedures. This expertise results in the successful updating of facilities, production procedures, and programs aimed to meet Good Practice standards as certified by the Federal Commission for the Protection of Public Health (Comisión Federal para la Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios).

Birmex has contributed to the production of biologics in Mexico as a part of the vaccination, diagnosis, and disease treatment programs implemented by the Federal Government of Mexico.

• Distribution of products manufactured by third parties,

In 1999, the Mexican government transformed the up to then Reagents and Biologics General Management, a department of the Health Ministry (Secretaría de Salud) in charge of vaccine production, into a state controlled company: BIRMEX.

BIRMEX is made up of four facilities:
Instituto Nacional de Higiene (National Hygiene Institute), located on Mariano Escobedo no. 20, col. Popotla, Delegación Miguel Hidalgo. México D.F. C.P.11400

Instituto Nacional de Virología (National Virology Institute) located on Prolongación Manuel Carpio no. 492, col. Casco de Santo Tomás, Delegación Miguel Hidalgo, México D.F.

The original laboratories have undergone transformations through the years due both to technological advances and Mexican health regulations.

Birmex and its laboratories work in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices and as a result important changes are constantly made to our facilities in order to keep them on the cutting edge of technology, thus complying with national and World Health Organization norms.

Each one of our products undergoes biologic and physicochemical quality control testing. The quality assurance system controls every stage of the industrial process to guarantee the results are within accepted standards.

The building on Amores street houses the CEO office and the chief offices for Marketing, Quality Assurance, Strategy and Planning, Legal Office, IT Office, and the Finished Product Storehouse.

The central warehouse works under cold chain conditions meeting the National standards. Its main function is to store the products which have been approved by the National Control Authorities and to distribute these products to decentralized Health Organisms throughout the country.

The storage capacity consists of 714 square meters divided in sixteen chambers, fourteen of which are refrigerated, the remaining two being freezing chambers. This capacity enables a proper inventory control, particularly in respect to the biologics expiry dates.

One of BIRMEX’s highest priorities is the development of new products to meet the vaccination needs. As a result, it is bound to keep at the R&D forefront both in human and technological resources.

In order to fulfill this task our research team develops new vaccine technologies and improves existing ones.

Some of the most salient projects currently in progress are:

• Development of a new Haemophilus Influenzae (Hib) vaccine.
• Rubella and Epidemic Parotitis vaccine
• Rabies vaccine

In preparation for the challenges to come BIRMEX is building a new multipurpose laboratory where the Haemophilus Influenzae (Hib) vaccine will be produced.

A new laboratory for the production of double and triple viral vaccines will be produced.
